PRESS RELEASE

Sailfish success at Sunshine Coast Spring Shootout

The Sunshine Coast Game Fishing Club conducted the 2010 Telstra Shop Kawana Waters Spring Shootout tournament off Mooloolaba from September 30 to October 3. Although sea conditions were not ideal the fleet of 24 boats ranging from six to 13m battled the waves but enjoyed a sailfish bonanza with some of the best fishing seen this year.

In total there were 79 sailfish and one striped marlin tagged and released as well as seven mahi mahi weighed in just two days of competition.

Champion angler overall was Grant Cooper with eight sailfish and a mahi mahi. He was fishing aboard Reel Capture which took out the Champion Team and Champion Boat over 6.5 meters with a total of 14 sails. They have become the team to beat in recent times and this makes it their 2nd tournament win in a row.

Runner up boat was Ymer who chased them to the wire on Saturday and were rewarded with Champion Female angler for Aimee Brooks and Champion Junior Daniel Brooks.

In the boats under 6.5m category Sailfisher took the Champion Boat honours and the well deserved Meritorious Capture was awarded to Conor Lynch for his epic three hour battle with a sailfish.

The other species award was taken by Greg Tuckwell with a fine 22.9 kg mahi mahi caught on 8kg line.

In the lucky angler draw Ian Mcrae won a 3.7m CrossXCountry boat ad 6hp Yamaha four-stroke outboard just for turning up.

We look forward to seeing all the competitors and sponsors again at our next tournament which is the Sunshine Coast Game Fishing Classic set for February 3-6, 2011.
