220 Anglers Participate in the 2008 Sarasota Slam Fishing Tournament
Use of Proceeds reeled in 2 Blue Marlin, 1 White Marlin and 1 Sailfish to win
$71,600.00 in the Billfish Division
 
AUGUST 11, 2008, SARASOTA, Fl. –Over 220anglers departed from the docks at Marina Jack this past week  to compete in the 8th Annual Sarasota Slam Fishing Tournament.  This event is a major fundraiser for the Home Builders Association of Sarasota. Even though the weather did not cooperate for the finish, anglers like Capt. Brian Miller, from Lani Kai out of Venice, FL fished for the first time in this tourney.  “I loved every minute it! This was a great tournament to fish in, we caught fish, had a good time and the best part was that all money goes to local charities!” said Miller.
                 “Even with the obstacles we faced: weather and tough economic times, this turned out to be a great and well-supported tournament,” says TJ Nutter, this year’s tournament chairperson.  “The fishing was fantastic, and everyone had a good time.     
            Sunny skies and calm seas greeted professional anglers as they hit the water Wednesday, August 6 for their first day of offshore billfish division fishing, and good fishing continued Friday and Saturday even thought the seas turned stormy and rainy as well. 
 In the Billfish Division, team Use of Proceeds led by Captain Dave Monda and Johnny Koontz, reeled in 2 blue marlin, 1 white marlin and 1 sailfish for a total of 1400 points, andalso won the Billfish Bonus Option and claimed $71,600 in prize money.
Captain Gary Hickman and Ray Howard of Team 1st Draw, with a total of 1200 points, nabbed second place with their catch of 1 blue marlin, 2 white marlin and 1 sailfish, and collected $15,000.00.   The First Place optional swordfish bonus of  $8,100 in the Billfish division was awarded  to FINS, with Captain Charles Kimsey for his 86 lb swordfish.
