The fishing was really good for this time of year when there have often been problems with red tide an excessively high temperature over the last 10 years. There was excellent water quality about 20 miles offshore nice blue water in the high 70'sF and full of life. There were LOTS of Dorado tailing in small schools on the surface and all teams caught plenty of dorado and about 250kg of fish was donated to various charities and orphanages during the event.
A total of 16 billfish were caught in the 2 day event, 4 marlin and 12 sailfish all but one tagged and released. Plus a few hundred dorado and some small tuna (YFT).
On the first day team XIRITPITI hit the jackpot and in the space of just 2 hours boated a 336kg marlin that they could not revive so ended up boating it. However shortly after putting lines back in they hooked another that they tagged and released. That plus three 8+kg dorado put them into a huge lead over the other 21 teams. On the final day they only managed dorado but this was enough for a 2459 points.
Not far behind in 2nd place was Peixfree, with 2316. This was result of 4 sailfish tagged and released plus the usual score of dorado. They caught 2 sailfish each day and with their four tags easily won the top tagger prize
In third place was the Marlinheiros with 1265 points from a tagged marlin and 5 dorado.
Joao Ribeiro the team Captain of XIRIPITI has been to Cabo twice and I am sure he will take his team to the finals in 2013.
